Despite what people may think, blog photography is hard work.
There are times when I truly struggle with taking a decent picture - the natural lighting's either crappy or non-existent, my camera starts being sassy and won't focus or just generally bad angles of all products involved.
Sigh.
Another thing I've also been focusing on recently is background imagery. A white background is always a winner since it's non-confrontational and makes everything else stand out. The top of my Malm Dressing Table is my prime photographing location.
However, sometimes just having your products on a plain background can look a little, well, boring.
Don't get me wrong, basic backgrounds are great for photographing alot of products (A 'What's in my Makeup Bag' or 'Hauls' for example) but I always find that if I'm taking a photograph of a single/few product(s), it needs something else in the frame with it.
My go-to for this kind of dilemma is a Magazine. I tend to use fashion mags (Vogue is my favourite) since they have more visually appealing pages, but anything goes really. It's just to make your photo a little more eye-catching to the reader. Visit this post here, here and here to see how I've styled mine.
Another option is Flowers. I have a small selection of fake flowers that I picked up cheap from Wilkos but real flowers would work too - you just wouldn't get as much mileage out of them. Flowers are definitely something I should use more in my photography, I love the look of other Bloggers' pictures when they contain some sort of foliage but I can never seem to get it right in mine. See this post here for how I use flowers in my photography.
Another prop would be general Bits & Bobs relevant to what you're blogging about. I don't tend to use these as often unless I'm actually blogging about them since I can usually get the picture I'm looking for with either a magazine or flowers. If money's tight though these are perfect since it's things you already own. A well placed lipstick or perfume bottle can do wonders for your photography.
I hope these give you some suggestions next time your photography sesh isn't exactly going according to plan (Lord knows I have plenty of those) and you're looking for a little inspiration.
Happy Snapping!
